Resistance Tubes...

So have you seen the news lately about Resistance Tubes? Many people - athletes, actors, stars, etc are starting to use them and they claim they really work well. The lacrosse team that I help coach started using them for our off-season workouts. I was pretty impressed with the variety and intensity of the workouts that we could do with them. The Resistance Tubes are a good change of pace for your workouts. Have you been using Resistance Tubes? What do you think? Are they working for you? Post here and tell us!!

Video games helping kids and adults lose weight

You know the other day I was thinking, its funny how video games are changing the way we exercise. When I was growing up, video games weren't really as big as they are now a days. Kids and adults spend many hours a day playing them. With the Nintendo Wii and a few other systems, they finally came up with something that you can enjoy playing and help you lose weight at the same time or atleast help you become more active.

There are many other video game companies that are coming up with similar devices. Fitcentric has a pretty cool device as well. If you haven't heard of it before, check out the cyberxtrain website for more information. I really like this application. I find riding the bike much more enjoyable using this system.

As well, because of all the hype regarding the Nintendo Wii I decided to buy it a few weeks ago.
I've been using it on average about 30 minutes per day. It's really fun and I think it will really change the video game industry. I've lost about 4 lbs in the past two weeks. I've posted more about the Wii and some of my training here. Check it out. If you've been using the Wii as well, feel free to post your results here. It would be great to hear how others are doing it too.

I found this from an article on "Next Generation" by Collin Campbell. Here's part of the posting - "A new study claims that extended use of consoles like Nintendo Wii really can burn calories – helping tubby gamers shed up to 27 pounds in a year. It turns out that games playing expends 60% more energy than sitting around; but playing Wii burns 156% more energy than pure sloth."

What's your thoughts on this? Do you believe this is going to change the way our kids and even adults think about working out? Do you think it will help America get leaner? Let us know your thoughts...

Thanks, DM

Walking the dog...

Happy first day of October. I was just reflecting back today after my walk earlier with my dog, Jade. She's gained a few pounds over the summer so I'm trying to help her lose alittle weight this fall. I was just reflecting on how beautiful the trails and parks we have here in NY. It's truly awesome. I'm lucky enough to be able to take breaks during the day where I can walk her and enjoy the great outdoors.

It's amazing how much more energized I am when I come back to the office. Even if you can get outside for a few minutes during lunch, go outside. Talk a brisk walk. When you come back in I'm sure you will feel much more energized.

Much more will be coming this fall on the cyberxtrain.com website so please stay tuned. Thanks again for reading! DM

Rowing machines - A great cardio workout....

So have you noticed in the gym, that piece of a cardo equipment that nobody really uses? Maybe its in the front of the cardio area or way in the back of the gym. It's that rowing machine that you always wondered about. I remember many times when I worked at the YMCA (years ago) and people would look at it and then run the other way. There was only a few people that used the machine. But I remember them being in really good shape and having no major joint pain from using the machine.

So about a year ago, I started looking into buying a rowing machine. I finally found one that I really liked (kettler rowing machin) and I have to say wow what a workout. Everything burns when I get off the rower and I only use it for 15 minutes. I plan on adding more time during the fall and winter months. My goal is to use the rower atleast 4 days a week. Anybody else have a rower at home? Maybe we can get some people to race together using NetAthlon? Alittle more motivation with some more people would be great. If you have a rower, do you agree with me that its a great cardio workout?

The one thing that I find with the rower is that its really not as boring as many people think it is. Honestly, the time on the machine goes pretty quickly and before you know it, your cardio workout is complete. Check out this rowing blog that I found the other day... it's a great link about the benefits of using a rowing machine. If you have any questions about the blog, please let me know.

Maybe next time you walk by the rowing machine you'll get on it instead of just walking by. Give it a shot, I'm sure you'll be glad you did!

Kettlebells gaining popularity....

Hey all - I was talking to a friend of mine that went to a fitness equipment expo a couple of weeks ago in CO. I asked if there were any vendors selling kettlebells and how the turn out was for those companies. He told me, there was many Kettlebell vendors and there were many people checking out their products. That's awesome to me. It's gaining popularity and its really showing. If you haven't tried kettlebells yet, go ahead and try them. Prices are starting to fall because of all the many choices out there and many gyms are starting to have Kettlebell classes. Try them out. It's a great change of pace.

Since I've starting using Kettlebells and focused on just using Kettlebells, I've lost a few inches and about 5 to 10lbs of fat. I feel better and more refreshed with the change of pace.

Give them a try if you'd like a great change of pace and looking for some variety in your workouts. Cheers, DM

NetAthlon 2.0 - Favorite course?

So I haven't really talked much about it lately but I haven't forgotten about the Netathlon application. I figured I would start focusing on this in the coming months, when it starts getting colder out. So let's get them juices flowing... tell us what your favorite bike riding course is?

I pretty much like them all but I like the Colorado trail one the best. I plan on hooking up my bike again soon, seeing that it will be getting cold out again. Maybe we can get a group of riders together, that would be fun.

Have a great day! I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks, Doug

Wii - will it help kids and adults lose weight?

So I've been doing some research lately about fun ways to get more kids and adults in shape. I've been hearing alot of hype lately about the Wii by Nintendo. I think it's a great tool to help kids and adults lose weight. There is much more that we need to do in order to get healthy, including eating healthier but maybe something like the Wii will help. I know friends and family that love this thing and say it's really alot of fun and burns calories.

I plan on buying a Wii at some point in the next few weeks / months. I first plan on buying an Elliptical trainer before the winter sets in here, but the Wii is second on my list. Check out this article about Wii being added in a gym. It's pretty cool.

Stay tuned for more about the Wii. Thanks for reading. DM

Interesting article about not doing cardio training

Here's an interesting article that I found about focusing on just doing strength training and leaving cardio out of your routine. Check it out here.
If you ever done a kettlebell routine, then you will know how great a workout this is. I plan on reducing some of my cardio exercises and add more bodyweight squats, pushups and kettlebell exercises. I'll post back here on how the routine is going. Feel free to post your comments about the article here as well. I'd love to hear your feedback.

By goal is to lose the inches around my stomach so I can see my 6 pack again before my wedding next year. I also wanted to change my diet and cleanse my system of all the toxins. So far so good. I'm feeling much better already.

If you're looking to lose some weight and get healthy, check out this book. It's a great book.

Looking to lose some bodyfat, read on..

Hi all - If you're looking to lose some unwanted bodyfat then checkout this great article by Shawn Phillips, located here. I started reading articles by Shawn, about 10 years ago. As far as cardio training, he's the man.

HIIT is a great cardio routine if you don't feel like sitting on a bike or walking / running on a treadmill for more then 30 minutes. I'm 100% behind Shawn when he says the HIIT system works. I lost about 20lbs of fat back 10 years ago when this program first came out. I used a bike too so it was much easier on my knees then using a treadmill.

If you're looking to lose some bodyfat, then try this system for two weeks and see what it can do. I'm sure you will be amazed!

I just ordered another exercise bike today and this is the website that I bought it from:

Check it out for some great deals!
